Eerily quiet at the Port de La Cayenne in Marennes on Boxing Day, oyster farmers and their customers alike are probably hurdled at home enjoying champagnes and delicately briny Marennes-Oléron oysters. Calls for a revisit next year, preferably before Christmas.

Speaking of oysters, I’d shucked 70 over Christmas (a first !) and enjoyed six on the shell (with a dash of the brother-in-law’s amazing homemade mignonette). Pretty much heaven to be in Charante-Maritime this time of the year. My shucking skills have improved but are not yet perfect. Here’s to more oyster-shucking (and slurping) in the new year to come ! Bon réveillon du nouvel an !

  1. Love your photos. This set conveys so much of that cold winter sea and grey. Could almost smell those oysters. 😛

  2. I will holler if i’m in the area!
