I was in Penang with my family a few months ago and we found ourselves in a family room at Ren i Tang, a cozy boutique hotel housed in a restored Chinese medical hall in Little India. Family room, because how else can we let mom fuss over us make sure everyone will be ready to head out on time ?

The rooms are simply but tastefully furnished, reasonably-priced and clean, so clean there’s even a shoes-off policy so you have to leave your shoes at the reception and climb upstairs to your room barefoot.

My only gripe was with the wifi, constantly weak and fidgety, in our room. That aside, we couldn’t have asked for a friendlier host in Karen who made sure my parents enjoy themselves and who also dished out tips on the best coffeeshop in the ‘hood to get breakfast at (to-die-for curry mee and wanton mee, yums).

Even if it is so hard for us, we know you are now safe in the arms of God in heaven free from pain and stress. I am sorry, Ah Yi. We love you and we miss you.
